It’s not often I render someone speechless, but that’s what happened when I came out to a resident at a medical center. During some routine questions, I told the resident I was a lesbian, and she got up and walked out without saying another word.

When I saw the same resident a month later, she apologized and said she’s since learned how my sexual orientation can affect her treatment. But why’d it have to take that experience for her to realize that?

I truly believe we can stop those experiences from happening to others, by both sharing our stories and coming out to our doctors. Will you join me in living your Health Out Loud?
