When I told my doctor I was going to start transitioning, she was very accepting. She was like, “OK, yeah! Have you started looking for a therapist?” I’ve had some difficulties with therapists. I went through a few before I finally found a good one.

She sat me down, and she asked me my name. When I said my birth name, she was, like, “Is that your name, or is that what’s on your ID?” That immediately opened me up, like wow, OK, she cares! She’s got my back, and I think that’s important.

Transitioning isn’t for the faint of heart. But there is nothing more powerful than a trans woman who owns her transness, no matter what it looks like. The more help that we give each other, a better community will happen.
